Sometimes we feel big feelings like being angry, sad, or super wiggly. 'Smell the Flower, Blow Out the Candle' is a special breathing trick that helps our bodies and minds feel calm and peaceful.When we breathe slowly and deeply, we tell our brains that everything is okay and it helps us relax.

Example 1 — Feeling Mad

Imagine your favorite crayon breaks. You might feel really mad!Pretend you are holding a beautiful flower in your hand.Bring it to your nose and breathe in slowly and deeply through your nose. Smell its lovely scent!Now, pretend you are holding a birthday candle with one little flame.Purse your lips and breathe out slowly and gently through your mouth to blow the candle out.Do this a few times until you feel your anger start to melt away.

It's your first day of a new class and your tummy feels fluttery. You feel a little worried!Close your eyes and picture your favorite color flower.Breathe in through your nose, pretending to smell that flower. Think "smell the flower."Now, imagine a small, flickering candle in front of you.Breathe out through your mouth to make the flame dance. Think "blow out the candle."Repeat this slow breath until your tummy feels more settled.
