What & Why

Water is awesome for swimming and playing, but it can also have hidden dangers called 'hazards.' A hazard is anything that could cause an accident or hurt someone. Learning to spot these hazards is like having a superpower that keeps you and your friends safe whenever you're near a pool, lake, or the ocean!

Example 1 — At the Pool

Scenario: You arrive at a friend's backyard pool party.Step 1: Scan the Area. Before you even jump in, take a look around. Is the pool deck wet and slippery? Are there toys scattered where someone could trip?Step 2: Look for a Grown-Up. Is there a 'Water Watcher' – an adult whose only job is to watch the swimmers? If there's no lifeguard, it's extra important that a responsible adult is paying close attention.Step 3: Check the Water. Can you see the bottom of the pool clearly? Murky water can hide dangers. Notice the depth markers. Know where the shallow end stops and the deep end begins. Stay away from drains and suction fittings, as they can be very powerful.Good Job! By looking first, you've already spotted potential hazards like a slippery deck and the importance of an adult watcher.

Example 2 — At the Lake or Pond

Scenario: Your family is having a picnic by a lake.Step 1: Check for Signs. Look for any safety signs. They might say 'No Swimming,' 'No Diving,' or 'Sudden Drop-Off.' These signs are there to protect you.Step 2: Examine the Entry. How will you get in the water? Is it a sandy beach or a rocky shore? Be careful of sharp rocks or slippery mud. It's best to enter the water feet first, never dive headfirst into water when you don't know how deep it is.Step 3: Look at the Water Itself. Lake water is often dark, so you can't see the bottom. This means there could be hidden rocks, logs, or even tangled weeds. Stay in designated swimming areas where it's likely to be safer.Smart Thinking! Natural water is beautiful but unpredictable. Spotting these hazards helps you choose the safest spot to cool...
