Key Rules & Conventions
The Standard '-s' Rule
Base Form + s
For the majority of regular nouns, simply add an '-s' to the end of the word to make it plural. This is the most common rule in English.
The '-es' Rule for Sibilants
Base Form + es
For nouns ending in s, x, z, ch, or sh, add '-es' to make the word plural. This addition makes the plural form easier to pronounce by adding an extra syllable.
The '-y' Rule
Consonant + y → -ies | Vowel + y → -ys
If a noun ends in a consonant followed by 'y', change the 'y' to 'i' and add '-es'. If a noun ends in a vowel followed by 'y', simply add '-s'.
