The '-ly' Rule Adjective + ly = Adverb Many adverbs are formed by adding '-ly' to an adjective. If you see a word ending in -ly, check if it's describing an action. For example, 'loud' becomes 'loudly' to describe how someone shouted. The Question Rule Find the verb, then ask: How? When? Where? Adverbs often answer one of these questions about the verb. In the sentence 'The bird sang sweetly,' find the verb 'sang'. Ask 'How did the bird sing?' The answer is 'sweetly,' so 'sweetly' is the adverb.
