Key Rules & Conventions

The 'Look Around' Rule Look at the words and sentences *around* the new word. Don't just stop at the tricky word. Read the whole sentence, and maybe even the sentence before and after. The clues are usually hiding nearby! The 'Clue Type' Rule Ask: What kind of clue is it? Think about if the sentence is giving you a definition, an example, a synonym (a word that means the same), or an antonym (a word that means the opposite). This helps you know what to look for. The 'Substitute and Check' Rule Try putting your guess in the sentence. Once you have a guess for the word's meaning, replace the tricky word with your guess. Does the sentence still make sense? If yes, you're probably right!
