Key Rules & Conventions
Rule 1: Most Nouns
Add -s to the end of the singular noun.
This is the most common rule. Use it for most nouns that do not end in -s, -x, -ch, -sh, -z, or a consonant + -y.
Rule 2: Nouns Ending in -s, -x, -ch, -sh, -z
Add -es to the end of the singular noun.
Use this rule when the singular noun ends with a sound that makes it difficult to add just an -s (like a hissing or buzzing sound). Adding -es makes the word easier to say.
Rule 3: Nouns Ending in Consonant + -y
Change the -y to -i and add -es.
If a noun ends with a 'y' and the letter *before* the 'y' is a consonant, you must change the 'y' to 'i' before adding 'es'.
