The Comma and Dialogue Tag Rule
Dialogue Tag + , + "Quotation."
When a dialogue tag (like 'he said' or 'she asked') comes before the quotation, use a comma after the tag and before the opening quotation mark. The first word of the dialogue is capitalized.
The Semicolon Connection Rule
Independent Clause 1 + ; + independent clause 2.
Use a semicolon to join two independent clauses that are closely related in meaning. This is perfect for when one of the clauses contains dialogue and the other clause adds more information about the same moment.
