Finding the Verb Stem
Infinitive Verb - '-AR' = Stem
To begin conjugating any regular -AR verb in the preterite, you must first find its stem. Simply remove the final two letters, '-AR', from the infinitive form of the verb.
Regular -AR Preterite Endings
yo: -é | tú: -aste | él/ella/usted: -ó | nosotros/as: -amos | vosotros/as: -asteis | ellos/ellas/ustedes: -aron
After finding the stem, attach the correct preterite ending that corresponds to the subject of the sentence. Note the crucial accent marks on the 'yo' and 'él/ella/usted' forms.
