The '-IR' Exclusivity Rule
Only -ir verbs that stem-change in the present tense can have a stem change in the preterite.
Verbs ending in -ar and -er (like 'pensar' or 'volver') NEVER have a stem change in the preterite, even if they do in the present. This rule is exclusive to -ir verbs.
The 'Sandalia' Conjugation Pattern
The stem change (e -> i or o -> u) only occurs in the third-person singular (él/ella/Ud.) and third-person plural (ellos/ellas/Uds.) forms.
The yo, tú, nosotros/as, and vosotros/as forms are conjugated like regular preterite -ir verbs without any stem change. The change is isolated to the 'bottom' two forms of the conjugation chart.
