Grammar Rules & Patterns

The Verb 'ir' (yo/tú) Yo voy (I go) / Tú vas (You go) The verb 'ir' (to go) is irregular. To say where you are going, always use 'voy'. To ask a friend where they are going, use 'vas'. The Contraction 'al' a + el = al When you are going 'to a' masculine place (like 'el parque'), the words 'a' and 'el' squish together to become 'al'. You never say 'a el'. Using 'a la' a + la = a la When you are going 'to a' feminine place (like 'la escuela'), the words 'a' and 'la' stay separate. They do not squish together.
