Grammar Rules & Patterns

The 'Es la' vs. 'Son las' Rule Use 'Es la una' for 1:00. Use 'Son las...' for all other hours (2:00-12:00). Think of it like this: 'una' (one) is a single hour, so we use the singular verb 'es'. All other hours, like 'dos' (two) or 'tres' (three), are plural, so we use the plural verb 'son'. The Half-Hour Formula Son las [hour] y media. To say it's half-past an hour, you first say the hour with 'Son las' (or 'Es la' for one) and then add 'y media'. 'Y' means 'and', and 'media' means 'half'.
