When you want to say what happened next in a story (Event 1, Event 2, Event 3), use the preterite. These are the 'plot points' of your narration. Rule 2: Imperfect for Background & Descriptions Use the IMPERFECT tense to describe the setting, weather, time, age, feelings, and ongoing actions in the background. Before the main action happens, what was the scene like? What were people doing or feeling? Use the imperfect to paint the picture for your listener.
