Grammar Rules & Patterns

This is the fundamental structure for expressing hypothetical situations that are contrary to present reality. The 'si' clause sets up the impossible or unlikely condition with the imperfect subjunctive, and the main clause states what would happen using the conditional. The order of the clauses can be reversed without changing the meaning. However, when the 'si' clause comes second, you DO NOT use a comma to separate the clauses.
