The 'I' and 'Am' Rule
I + am
The word 'I' is special. It always, always, always uses 'am'.
The 'One Thing' Rule
One person/thing + is
If you are talking about one thing (like he, she, it, the cat, a toy), use 'is'.
The 'More Than One' Rule
More than one person/thing + are
If you are talking about more than one (like we, they, the cats, two toys), use 'are'.
The 'You' Rule
You + are
The word 'you' is also special! It always uses 'are', even if you are talking to just one person.
