The 'O' Vanishing Act Helping Verb + not ➡️ Helping Verb + n't The letter 'o' in 'not' vanishes! An apostrophe takes its place. The Squish Rule Two words become one word. After the 'o' vanishes, we squish the two words together to make one new word. The 'Will Not' Special Trick will not ➡️ won't The words 'will not' are special! They don't follow the rule and become 'won't'.
