What & Why

Your heart is a super strong muscle inside your chest. Its job is to pump blood all around your body, like a delivery truck bringing energy and oxygen everywhere you need it. When you hear or feel a thump-thump, that's your heartbeat! When you run, jump, and play, your body needs more energy. So, your heart works harder and beats faster to deliver that energy quickly. This is healthy and makes your heart muscle even stronger!

Example 1 — The Quiet Turtle

Let's find our heartbeat when we are calm.Sit down criss-cross applesauce and be very still, like a turtle resting in its shell.Place the palm of your hand flat on the center of your chest.Be quiet and try to feel a gentle beat. Thump... thump... thump. This is your resting heartbeat. It's slow and steady because your body doesn't need much energy right now.

Example 2 — The Hopping Bunny

Now, let's see what happens when we move a little.Stand up in a safe space. For one minute, hop up and down like a happy bunny in a field. Boing, boing, boing!Stop hopping and stand very still.Quickly put your hand back on your chest. What do you feel now?The thump-thump-thump is faster and stronger! Your heart is working harder to give your hopping muscles energy.
